Brief Overview: In a significant move, the Maharashtra government has officially launched the “Mumbai Rising – Creating an International Education City” project by issuing Letters of Intent (LOIs) to five renowned foreign universities. The event took place at noon at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. This initiative marks a major step toward transforming the region into a global education hub.

The proposed International Education City will be located within a 5-kilometre radius of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. This will be India’s first dedicated education zone to host world-class universities, offering global-standard academic facilities and promoting international collaboration in higher education.

About “Mumbai Rising” and the Education India

  • Project Core: The Education City, part of the grander “Mumbai Rising” blueprint, is a thematic sector designed to attract top-tier global universities, research hubs, and innovation centres.
  • Multiple Sectors: Besides the Education City, the plan includes Medi City, Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and Data Centres – envisioning a dynamic, innovation-driven new cityscape.
  • Strategic Location: The hub will be located within 5 km of the new Navi Mumbai International Airport, ensuring excellent connectivity. CIDCO will act as the special planning authority.
  • Target Universities: Eventually, the EduCity plans to host up to 10 foreign university campuses, with the latest five now receiving LOIs.
  • Economic Vision: Officials expect this initiative to catalyse Maharashtra’s ambition to become a $1 trillion economy, contributing meaningfully to India’s target of $5 trillion by 2029.

Infrastructure & Connectivity Boost

  • Airport Connectivity: The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (expected operational by March 2025) will be the linchpin for global and domestic travel.
  • Metro Connectivity: The planned Mumbai Metro–8 “Golden Line” will link Mumbai’s Terminal 2 to Navi Mumbai Airport for seamless travel.
  • New City Transit: “Third Mumbai” – centred on KSC New Town near the airport—is already mapped for multimodal transport, including suburban rail extensions and expressway links.
  • Future Expansion: Additional infrastructure includes extensions of the Coastal Road, Vadhavan deep-draft port, and even a bullet train corridor.
