Mock Drill Scheduled Tomorrow: Amid rising security concerns, large-scale civil defence mock drills will be conducted on Thursday, May 29, 2025, in four Indian states bordering Pakistan—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. These coordinated drills are designed to evaluate the current state of emergency response systems and improve preparedness for potential threats or emergencies.
Mock Drill Scheduled Tomorrow
Authorities aim to strengthen coordination among various departments, raise public awareness, and ensure readiness in case of any untoward incidents. The initiative follows recent developments along the border, highlighting the importance of proactive measures to safeguard civilian lives and infrastructure in strategically sensitive regions.
Background: Operation Sindoor and Subsequent Measures
Earlier this month, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was a response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which resulted in the loss of 26 civilian lives. Following these events, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed 244 districts nationwide to conduct civil defence exercises, including blackout drills, air raid sirens, and evacuation protocols, to bolster readiness against potential threats.
Details of the Upcoming Mock Drills
The scheduled drills on May 29 will encompass:
- Blackout Exercises: Simulated power outages to test response mechanisms.
- Air Raid Sirens: Activation to assess public awareness and reaction.
- Evacuation Protocols: Rehearsals for safe and orderly evacuations.
- Public Awareness Sessions: Educational initiatives to inform citizens about emergency procedures.
These activities are designed to evaluate the coordination between civil administration, defence forces, and local communities.
Haryana’s “Operation Shield”
In addition to the drills in the four border states, Haryana will conduct a state-wide civil defence exercise named “Operation Shield” on May 29. The exercise will involve:
- Mobilization of Civil Defence Personnel: Including wardens, volunteers, and youth organizations such as NCC, NSS, NYKS, and Bharat Scouts and Guides.
- Controlled Blackout: A 15-minute power outage from 8 PM near vital areas, excluding essential services like hospitals and police stations.
The objective is to enhance emergency preparedness and response capabilities across all 22 districts of the state.
Government’s Stance on Security Preparedness
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underscored the urgency of shifting from a proxy war mindset to a more direct and assertive approach in tackling security threats. He stressed the importance of proactive strategies to safeguard the nation and build resilience against emerging challenges.
Emphasizing national security as a top priority, the Prime Minister called for enhanced coordination, intelligence sharing, and preparedness across all levels of governance. His remarks reflect a broader commitment to strengthening India’s defence framework and ensuring the safety of its citizens amid evolving geopolitical and internal security dynamics.
Public Advisory
Residents in the affected regions are advised to:
- Stay Informed: Keep abreast of local announcements regarding the drills.
- Participate Actively: Engage in the exercises to familiarize themselves with emergency procedures.
- Remain Calm: Understand that these drills are precautionary measures aimed at enhancing safety.
These mock drills represent a concerted effort by the Indian government to fortify the nation’s preparedness against potential threats, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
